o present an artistic speech with effort but at the same time successfully is exalted in two dimensions, seeking to use each movement to present not sentimentalism but perception, which is what Sebastián (Enrique Carbajal) achieves in each of his representations.
It is not necessary to know the artist to realize that each of his works expresses a profound reflection that can envelop you for long hours, the same hours that Sebastian dedicates to each of his projects to ensure that you do not abandon your admiration for them; at least that is what happens to me.
The cultivated history of the Renaissance period and its eagerness to continue learning more about the history of art were elements that left a great impact on the essence of young Enrique Carbajal González, who many art lovers now know faithfully as “Sebastián.”
Who is Sebastian?
Enrique Carbajal was born in the well-known Chihuahua in the year of 1947, but the true essence that marked a new path known as Sebastián, saw the true light in the year of 1968. This name became more than just a simple business card, it became a reminder of a great event in Sebastian’s life, when he became an Honorary Member of the Hague Academy of Arts, located in Holland.
To take a tour of the different artistic centers and museums of the country is to walk towards a safe encounter with one of the many works that this artistic essence has created in his career, besides, I cannot help but remember that the art and fame of Sebastián have been worthy of multiple honorable and award-winning distinctions, among which are The Medaille de la Ville de Paris and the Jerusalem Prize.
Among the different characteristics that serve to describe Sebastián is his insatiable curiosity that incites him to continue investigating and discovering about a variety of topics that not only make him grow intellectually but also help to elevate his artistic and expressive essence more and more. Likewise, this need to continue researching and snooping has allowed him to become a full-time researcher for UNAM; this event highlighted his stature a bit more, as such an appointment has never been granted to an artist in the past, since for many, artists do not investigate, but he has shown quite the contrary.
An essence that becomes works
To be able to talk about the representation of Sebastián’s essence in his works and what it represents not only for me or for him as an artist, but for an entire culture that has influenced the entire Mexican land, I would simply need to publish an extensive book that can be appreciated at leisure and that is why to say that it is an easy and short career to comment on would simply be a deceitful and clandestine deception for those who feel the interest to know him.
His work represents a broad and constant quest to express something much more than a simple combination of geometric shapes in compositions presented with subjectivity, in reality, it has been more related to demonstrating that art can be expressed in the contemporary without the need to be influenced by sentimentality and more by free perception and interpretation.
His works are influenced more by scientific intuition than by emotional, but that peculiarity is what has helped his presentations to obtain a nature of great scale and capacity, so much so that they have managed to stand out in urban space and that in my visits to various cities in the country I have been able to see and admire.
Whether you are in Mexico City, Chihuahua, Morelia, Toluca, Monterrey, or even in Cancun, you will find a grain of Sebastian’s artistic poetry that I know you will contemplate as I do. The artistic vision of this essence that is Sebastián has also managed to capture his geometric but artistic vision in various parts of the world, from distant Switzerland, through Israel, Brazil, Canada, the United States, Japan, and Portugal.
Science and art are part of Sebastián
The ability to mix in a flowing source the intelligence and sensitivity of a person to imagine it in their mind, transport it to their hands, and bring it to a physical plane is something that we can all achieve, but few are those who manage to exploit that true spark that manages to capture the attention of thousands, and that is what Sebastian represents and expresses.
Sebastián becomes the owner and king of space, allowing every space of his imagination to run free, to express and expose everything he has learned in each of his investigations and studies about geometry. Only a true researcher of the plastic arts is the one who can find a way for mathematics to work in his favor so that he can enrich all his sculptural work and take care of the aesthetics of his presentations.
A heart and a personality docile, expressive, and experienced, is what lines the room that forms everything that represents being Sebastian in this world of hundreds of expressions, but no matter what his hands do, he will always seek that you have your own opinion of his work, because his works also reflect that freedom of understanding, that many artists should have and that I love.
